Work camps in World War Two?

Hey, I'm writing a piece of creative writing and it's set in WW2, and i don't really know anything about that time, and i have a couple of questions for someone who loves history.. It would help me so much to get an idea of the contextual background of my story :)

1. Why would the soviets want to imprison a German woman? What would she have done for example for her to become imprisoned?
2. What sort of things would a woman do in a work camp? would it still be manual labour??
3. I read somewhere that woman we released back to Germany if they were pregnant or seriously ill (in which theyd have to go to hospital). is the pregnancy thing true? and how would they check she was?

Thankss :)
