Women who actually don't like 'chick flicks'.

I've got a friend who can't believe I hate 'chick flicks'.

I'll bodyswerve anything at the cinema that looks remotely girlie; instead I love going to see dramas, thrillers and even gory horror.

My DVD collection includes stuff like The Blair Witch, Saw, 28 Weeks/ Days Later, the Almodovar collection, etc etc. I'd call it eclectic but for the fact there's nothing remotely girlie in there at all.

Just wondering how many other women out there go out of their way to avoid anodyne, schmaltzy saccharine (usually American, sorry) tripe and actually conform more to a bloke's taste in films?

What do you love, and what kind of stuff do you hate?

You are not alone Millie Muppet.
I can't stand Rom-Coms, love stories and the like. I get so bored.
Someone started a thread about 'Love Story' a little while ago. I remember seeing it in the cinema and being one of the only girls to came out of the cinema with dry eyes.
Same with 'Titanic'.
Love thrillers though.

I hate chick flicks and rom coms too. I'm not really much of a movie watcher but I do like supernatural/sci-fi stuff. I recently saw Pan's Labyrinth and I love it.

I like Sci-Fi, Horror and thrillers though occasionally watch other genres.

My real favourites are Japanese/Korean Horror films, films like Saw, Hostel, Rambo, Cloverfield, the Alien Films, AVP, Hellraiser, Evil Dead, Robocop, Predator, 28 days/weeks later, Tattoo etc.

I have so far managed to avoid the Bridget Jones films, things like 4 Weddings & a Funeral, Love Actually etc.

Although I like Spaghetti Westerns, I don't like the traditional John Wayne type westerns.

I'm a woman and I can't bear chick flicks or chick-lit.

I *hate* films like Sleepless in Seattle, Briget Jones, Love Actually, 4 Weddings, bleeeh puke. Also, hate those american trash high school teen type things American Pie type rubbish. I also hate wishy washy female comedy such as Victoria Wood, French & Saunders, Tittybangbang, etc.

My fave genre is psychological thrillers and horror, for example I enjoyed The Cell on cable last night even tho it had J-Lo in it! And I love edgy British female comedy - Pulling, Nighty Night, Miss Jocelyn.

Not a chick lit fan either!
I know loaRAB of females who don't like them, it's like saying all guys just watch action movies!
I like alternative and slightly left of centre movies, not a huge blockbuster fan at all.
I like a good thriller, and a good drama, well acted.

Yayy!! Great thread. I don't like them either unless you class the old classic musicals as chick flicks. Other than those, i'd rather watch a good thriller or comedy (Not the romantic variety!) Maybe life has turned me into a jaded old cynic, but those soppy, happy endings just don't happen in reality - or not very often. Can't bear chick lit either but that thread's been done already.

Female, and I wrote a PG dissertation on war films! I'd pick war films over rom-coms any day of the week. The only exceptions are old school comedies and musicals (Some Like It Hot, The Philadelphia Story, Bringing Up Baby) etc.

I hate all those typical teen/girl movies - Grease (which I only saw for the first time about 3 months ago), Dirty Dancing, Pretty Woman, etc, they all make me want to hurl. Anything that is described as a "tearjerker" I will avoid like the plague.

I will, however, quite happily bawl my eyes out watching gangster movies. Go figure.

Most recent incident that comes to mind is my frienRAB wanting to go see "Over Her Dead Body" and I said I'd sooner not go than spend money to sit through that pile of shit.

I love a lot of the older romantic comedies, The Apartment, Some Like it Hot and Woody Allen films for example. But I can't think of many modern rom coms that are actually good:Amelie, Punch-Drunk Love, High Fidelity and thats about it.

Yeah- Im not crazy about them and I agree with the last post about older movies and off kilter "blokey/chick flicks" like About a Boy and High Fidelity.

SOME are good- harry met Sally for example.

But the mains ones: Love Actually? Bridget Jones? Sleepless in Seattle? Ghost?? BLEUUUGHHHH!!!

Actually, I do like girly films (simple, no thought necessary) but most people look at me strangely when I talk about loving war movies. And? I'm 20, I like them. Not a big deal!

I'll actually watch anything (same goes for TV!) except horrors...now these I don't find entertaining at all. Waiting to be frightened holRAB no enjoyment what so ever for me.

It's all personal taste though isn't it?

Can't bear them, Pulp Fiction is my fav film of all time, I much prefer something with a bit of action in it! Love Sci-Fi as well, read lots of horror books but I have to confess I'm not so good when watching the films.....guess that's a bit girly!

I'm with you on the detesting of "Chick Flicks" OP. I'm with ya. :p ;)
I can't stand them, they irritate me beyond belief and they're all the same no matter how you dress em' up...
Boy meets Girl across a crowded room, Boy likes Girl, Girl likes boy...etc, etc...
Give me a chop-socky, fast paced adrenaline fuelled Thriller or Action movie anyday! :D :p
Like to feel the heart pumpin' and Chick Flicks do the opposite, send me to sleep

I wouldn't dismiss 'chick flicks' out of hand. I really liked Bridget Jones, Ghost etc. but my tastes are quite eclectic. I can't really say what type of film I like. Some of my favourites are Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Stand By Me, Cider House Rules, The Bourne films, there are too many for me to list them all but my absolute favourite of all time is Brokeback Mountain. !!

Cannot stand them, I find them almost insulting! Terrible, terrible films. But then again I view television/cinema as escapism, so I have no interest in seeing something vaguely similar to real life.

Then again, I love sport and I'm about to start a temporary electronics teaching post, so I'm not the ordinary girl.
