I responded to a question asked by "Female Superiority" a while ago and I was just browsing and saw that this is the answer that was picked as the best answer by 4 voters. The question was whether or not the world would be a better place if women ruled it. "Zach C" responded to the question with this: "No we would all be living in grass huts still living in a feeble horticultural society that could barely support anyone. The reason behind this, is men are proactive, women are reactive. If women ruled the world nothing would have been done scientifically or technologically. It was men that dared to venture out of the norm and look for new discoveries. It was men that created all that we say right now: the roads, the infrastructure, the computers you are typing on right now. What do you think you would be doing right now if women ruled the world? Gathering Berries?"Now, if only one voter picked this then I would assume it was just "Zach C" choosing his own answer, but the fact that 3 others actually agreed enough with this ignorance to vote for this, it boggles my mind. I say this response was ignorant because you can't oppress women and tell them that their place is in the home, deny them access to their own money, ownership, certain levels of education and then say "women are reactive and men are proactive" and base this deduction on the fact that many of the modern day inventions have been created by men. Were women ever given the opportunity to be proactive? No, they were not. Just in the past 2 decades or so have women really had the opportunity to reach out on their own from under the shadow of the domineering men and show how proactive we are and that what we do, say, think and feel are not just reactions to men. Any progress we did make were still under the umbrella of all of the progress made by men so that we may make contributions, but we were never really allowed to be proactive until very recently. Furthermore, when we attempt to be so, we are scoffed at because we may be being proactive and coming up with ideas that are "not as the men would do it" so rather than such ideas being taken by their own merit, they are denounced as inferior and forgotten. With this said, I must ask, what do you guys think about the answer given by Zach C? Based on the history of women and their forced roles in this world, do you believe that women are only ever capable of being reactive creatures or can we, given the appropriate opportunities be just as proactive as men?JB: Your answer aside from proving my point was not really answering my question. If women were not given any opportunities aside from those that men said they COULD have, then how can you say what women can or can't do when they were never given the chance to do so? Men may be stronger in some things, but women are stronger in others. Just because MEN have placed conditions on which of these things are "better" or "more relevant" does not mean that women's strengths are any less necessary. For example, I've heard that in Japan (as well as in many other cultures) the husband brings his entire check home to his wife and she gives him his allowance and spends the money and takes care of the household as she sees fit. In this scenario, MEN may have decided that they are better equipped to be in the workforce, but clearly understand that women have the brains and thoughtfulness to keep their households and the economy going and that is a strength that is just as important.Fereshte: Thank you! The Cherokee women, for example, had a matriarchal society. WOMEN had control of the house, the children, the money and EVERYTHING! They even worked in the fields. The ONLY thing the men were responsible for was hunting and then they got back home, they were basically the wives as the women ran the households and the children belonged to the women, not the men as in most Middle Eastern nations. People seem to have a very limited view of history. Contrary to popular belief, many African and Native American cultures had women at the heads of communities and tribes, and even armies. Men accepted this and believe in the power of women and their capabilities.
