With asthma do you ever feel normal again?

I have been diagnosed with asthma. I use inhaled steroiRAB once a day (2 puRAB). I DO NOT use a rescue inhaler. My breathing is fine and the breathing tests are fine. I have never needed the rescue inhaler, but I have tried it a few times to see what it would do. It had no affect on my particular symptoms. I DON'T have any problems sleeping due to my asthma. I DON'T cough. I DON'T wheeze. I DON'T have typical asthma symptoms. My complaint was irritated chest feeling and being sensitive to smells.

Can a person with asthma ever feel normal again? Even though my irritated lung feeling is gone and my breathing is fine, I always have this awareness of my lungs. I don't know how to describe it. For example: you don't think about your big toe unless it was sore from an ingrown toenail and then you notice your toe constantly. Well, my lungs aren't sore or anything like that, but I do notice them most of the time. I know asthma is forever, but can it be so controlled that you never think twice about your lungs? Can asthma be so controlled that perfume and caulk and smelly things don't cause you any problems?

I would suggest an antihistamine for the smells...or adding singulair to your regimen as what you mention is typically allergy induced asthma. It certainly can't hurt.

Yes, you can feel normal again! Just like that ingrown toenail on your big toe, after you have an extended time without problems, you are less aware of your toe until one day you happen to be looking at your feet and realize you haven't thought about that toe in a while!

If you are "aware" of your lungs, you may still be recovering, even if you don't notice any particular symptoms you may not yet be 100%. Also, you could try the allergy meRAB and see if it helps. I am very sensitive to "chemical" smells (that is, almost any man-made airborne substance) but taking allergy meRAB as a preventive doesn't work for me, as my sensitivity is dependent on what is in my environment then, not every day.
