Wireless printer says it's "offline"?

Hi, I have this Brother wireless printer. I used it last year in my dorm room with the printer and my computer connected to the same ethernet router thing (it wasn't a wireless router; it was plugged into the wall and my devices had an ethernet cord plugged right into it). It worked fine, didn't use any wireless settings or whatever. This year I tried using it wirelessly in my apartment and it never seemed to do anything. one day I fiddled around with it and my whole network went down and the router never worked again...I don't know if that was a coincidence or what but I've been afraid to mess with it. Now I just use it with a USB cable, but I recently got tired of having to go out into the living room with my laptop every time to print something. I can't access it wireless but I don't know why...in MS word or something, if I try to print from my room it says the router is offline. What do I do? Where can I change the settings to get it to work wirelessly from my room? Do I have to use an ethernet cord and plug the printer into the router? Do I need to delete the printer from my devices and reinstall? When I try to search for it on the network it never finds it...
Any help appreciated!
