Winter season 2009/2010 season

This show is probably the ideal example of "Don't judge a book by its cover." I went in expecting generic school life with some magic. The minute the episode started and I saw the SHAFT-like art style (I thought it was SHAFT at first but then I saw it was Silver Link) I knew this was something special. The OP wasn't that hot but then the episode actually started and I realized that something special had just happened.

If you're a fan of RPG's this is the show to watch. At first I was incredibly confused by what they were parodying but as it went on and you actually saw the battle sequences, it became very enjoyable. It's also pretty funny which is a plus.

Also, there was a random "I'm in despair" which put a big ol' smile on my face. There was also a random Gurren Lagaan art moment with made my smile even wider.

I haven't read the manga but apparently they removed some stuff and added some new stuff. Probably cause it'll be 12 or 24 episodes

^^^Well they must have changed a lot of stuff, cause i only found the manga to be mildly entertaining and only a little interesting (nothing id be willing to sit through long anime episodes for).

Damn, Qwasar has a badass OP song

And hey! It's the singer from "mind as judgement"!

Dare I check out episode 1? Well, Tae's description intrigued me so, heck, why not.

No love for Hidamari Sketch's third season premiere?

Really good way to kick off the season, but seriously, SHAFT, what's with your fetish of Yuno's X hairclip thing? STOP IT.

NNGGGGGGAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH TOO MUCH CUUUUUUTE!

-It's like Gainax said "Hey let's make the moe-ist anime ever....but let's not put fanservice in and just focus on the cute."

-What I was most surprised on was on Tsuchida's sempai and how gradually it was revealed that she
1. dropped out of school to be with her husband
2. Was already pregnant when she dropped out
3. Her husband was her TEACHER!
And on top of that, the teacher seems to be a pretty nice guy with no jerky habits to speak of. Impressive Gainax. You have hooked another viewer.

-Anzu is love, Koume is uber-love, Hii-chan was wearing cat pajamas with a moving tail and that just exploded the cuteness chart.

-Anyone else notice Anzu's hair is like Hikaru from Hikaru no go? (the blond front hair and then the back is a darker color)

Omamori Himari

Best show ever, huh? Original, takes time to reveal a character's true personality, The depth of feeling is immediate, action moves logically but still able to surprise, lets face it, you never know what's going to happen next!

And what a daring choice to feature a bathing suit shopping trip and beach episode in the second episode!

I can't wait for next week!

*sigh*

Lol, I didn't read the "sarcasm" part so I took that post out of context

I think I'll do a Winter review once Katanagatari comes out as that's the only other show I think will be interesting. This season was very surprising both positively and negatively.

I was going to wait until Katanagatari aired but I found out they're doing a "one episode a month" thing and I just don't think that's enough to form a proper opinion. Still gonna check it out though.

Okay, so I guess I'll try first impressions for this season. For the most part, I was actually surprised. A lot of the shows I thought would suck turned out to be not so bad....of course, a good few of them did suck but that's for the review. Let's get to it.

Durarara!!

-Once the word "Baccano" was uttered with this production, this was most likely THE most hyped anime of Winter 09. Did it live up? Yeah, yeah it did. In fact it more than lived up to it. Probably because seeing a lot of generic stuff over the previous few seasons, it's nice to come to the untypical genre buster. The mood is great, the animation is quite different and for those who are Baccano fans like me, well the influences are all over this work but not enough to make it seem like a carbon copy. Heck, the OP is done in the exact same style as "Guns and Roses" and the fans love it just for that reason. Us viewers may not know what's going on immediately but maybe because of that and the way it has mysteriously introduced the main players is why we are interested. Again, Brains Base. You have created a winner.

Score thus far: 9.5/10 (.5 taken off just because it got a little draggy with the talking at parts but not enough to really hamper it)

Hanamaru Kindergarten

-I'll be honest. This was not catching my interest. I even said, the only way I'd watch this is if it was on CR. Well...it was on CR. So I watched keeping expectations low. However, I probably should have remerabered that this was the fusion of Gainax and the freaking director of Gundam 00 (seriously, how does a corabination like that create something like this) because I was nearly blown away. Not because it had a deep plot or anything but because it was so....well, cute! And simple too. I thought this wouldn't have any interesting qualities but it's just really hard to dislike. (I mean, unless you just hate children. You don't hate children do you!?) The kiRAB are just being kiRAB and the adults are just trying to deal with them. No ecchi, no forced humor, no unwanted madness. Just fun times at a kindergarten. And because of that simplicity with a touch of Gainax, it works.

Score 9/10 (slice-of-life doesn't work for everyone, some may not even look at the fun side of the show and just focus on how wrong it is that a child has an innocent crush on her teacher)

Two more reasons why this is awesome
1. Space [strike]Battleship Yamato[/strike] Hanamaru Kindergarten
2. Hii-chan (my favorite character) likes to cosplay. Gainax takes advantage

Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu (BakaTest)

-What I expected-Generic, fanservice crud with no redeemable qualites
What I got-A damn hilarious anime with RPG game elements and references ranging from Final Fantasy to Zetsubou Sensei. Also, half the staff is from SHAFT which explains why it looks like SHAFT

The ultimate surprise this season (IT'S A TRAP!), BakaTest is something I can definitely say, "Yes, I laughed at this. Yes I am enjoying it. Yes, this is probably the comedy of Winter 09." Really going completely blind into this, I had no idea what to expect. Really all the promo material just reminded me of some show that I had seen before but it turned out to be really good! The test=battle system works very well and the characters are surprisingly likable even though their personality traits have probably been done before. I thoroughly enjoyed all of it which is why I'm nervous that it could crash and burn before it's time is over. But for now, I'll just appreciate a character slicing a rival student's monster like Cloud did in Advent Children.

Score 9/10 (Remeraber how I said this had SHAFT people involved? Yeah, the animation is weird like that. The concept won't grab all and Lacus-expy Himejii will annoy some)

Hidamari Sketch (Hoshimitsu)

-Really, there's not a lot to say about this. Third season of Hidamari Sketch with fun and slice-of-life for all. SHAFT sure likes that X decoration though

Score 8/10 (More of the same really)

SoRaNoWoTo

-Yeah, this is gonna be called Military K-ON for a while but can you blame them? Even I've gotta admit the similarities despite the fact that it's a very different show and style altogether. It's very serene. Artistic too. It gives more of a sense of a story that's setting up for things to happen eventually rather than dump everything on the viewer. It doesn't focus on its moe factor that much either. And I like that. It's not a lot to add to it but the little bit that it does counts. That's the kind of artistic styles that I enjoy in my anime. (you could probably see the girls as expys of the K-On band too )

Score 8/10 (It won't drop it's "Military K-ON" package for a while as it's clearly piggying off it's style while still being it's own show. Kumika's kinda annoying at times)

Dance in the Vampire Bund

-God I am so glad I didn't read the manga because if I had I probably wouldn't have been able to enjoy this at all. At least that's what the manga readers say. I'll read the manga after it's done. Nobody seems to get that this is 12 episodes of an ongoing manga so we wouldn't have gotten the whole story anyway. Oh well. SHAFT's second work and the anime I was also most interested in is...very weird. Especially the first episode. The gecko vampire probably is what got me. I find it interesting that a werewolf can just...lose it's memory like that but I'm enjoying it thus far. I like the way SHAFT took the title of the show literally with the OP song (it may disturb some though. I liked it in any case). I definitely like how Mina takes charge, but I didn't like that she suddenly needed to be rescued in the subsequent episode. It might be too early to judge this one but these are just first impressions so...

Score 7.5/10 (It does have a loli. It's infrequent and only happened once but it has no problem showing the top half her naked either. That will squick more than a few. Also, I didn't like the inconsistency with Mina switching from awesome to helpless though not as much as most of the internet)

Ookami Kakushi

-To some it is Higurashi 2.0. To me, it's like "Well duh, this is a Ryukishi work after all." The third anime I was looking forward too has sadly ended up low on my list. Mainly because the atmosphere, while very creepy, hasn't instantly grabbed me like Higurashi did. Another negative is that I don't know why AIC keeps CGI'ing that wheelchair but it is annoying as heck and I wish they would stop. For those who watched 11eyes, people have already started calling Isuzu this season's Yuka (I should know, I kinda started it on MAL ) For those who don't know who Yuka is, think of Isuzu as Yachiru from Bleach if she was a high schooler. The benefits of this show though are the fact that it is genuinely mysterious. I don't have a clue as to what's happening or why people keep turning feral but I have more than a few guesses like I did with Higurashi. I'm sticking with it mainly for the same reason as 11eyes. Because I have no idea what's going on and I want to see the answer to the mystery.

Score 7/10 (Damn, Isuzu is annoying. CGI wheelchair neeRAB to go and the uniforms aren't that appealing. Gets boring at times. Seems like the only excitement happens in the last five minutes of the show and they are very exciting indeed. Great OP and ED though)

Ladies vs. Butlers

-This is going to be really hard to review and this may make me lose some respect in some of your eyes but I'm gonna stick with this unless I really can't take it anymore. The sentence "Animation the same as Kanokon" has already started slitting eyes and you'd be right. This anime is ecchi. Not like "this is nearly H-anime" ecchi but definitely Kanokon-ish ecchi (does that count as nearly H-anime?). So why do I think about sticking with it? Well for one, Rie Kugimiya's in it...and she's not the tsundere (She's playing a girl disguised as a boy so she's using her Alphonse voice) which is a nice surprise and I think there are a few chuckle-worthy moments.

Also, Tomomi rocks and I love her troll faces

It's very stupid but like Commando it's a very guilty pleasure and so far, I haven't facepalmed that much.

Score 6/10 (Barely passable work. Every time I think I could be watching something better, something funny happens. Every time I think this show isn't half bad, the main guy enRAB up with his face in panties. It's a conundrum I know.)

Fun fact! See the little girl there!? The one smaller than all the others with the green bow on her uniform? She's 19.

Seikon no Qwasar

-This is....strange.

It's a bad show. Very blatant and is this season's Queen's Blade/Juuden-chan as in this season's "nearly an H-anime" show. But it has (and here's the twist) a plot. It's not an amazing one but it does have one. It's actually kind of interesting too. I'd probably be more interested in it if it wasn't my kind of show. Tae gave an interesting perspective on it before and I'd have to agree. If in order to give the ultimate irony, I've apparently come to the realization that the animation company wanted to mess with the viewers as much as possible because this show is utterly terrible with censors. I know that sounRAB weird but it's true. Scenes don't flow, plots don't make sense and for some reason, you don't even try to take in the censors as part of the show like Nogizaka Haruka: Purezza. They're so bad, you're wondering "Why is all this stuff blocking the screen? Did you pay base minimum for this?"

Score: 5.5/10 (Add .5 for a passing grade if you don't mind this stuff. This show is only not a 0 becasue it's plot doesn't completely blow. OP song kicks ass though. It's by the same singer from the one in Canaan)

Omamori Himari/Chu-Bra-Hi, CR. garfield15, loyal anime meraber here. I'd like to wonder why these two had to be it. Obviously the answer is that they were cheap and easy to acquire but they really aren't that great. I was hoping I'd be surprised like I was with Sora no Otoshimono but I'm really not. I'm disappointed and just add them to the list of pointless service 12/13 episode anime. Especially Chu-Bra. That's just boring. It takes the idea of forming an underwear club completely straight...which is boring. I'd like it to at least throw some pointless stuff besides the ecchi so I could at least criticize that but I can't...cause it's boring. I'm not even going to get into Omamori but I do enjoy that the main girl is voiced by Holo. I'm not liking that the main guy has a cat allergy right after I came out of the hilarious Nyan Koi. Worst of worst? This is another example of one of those shows where there aren't any characters but stereotypes of characters we've seen before in equally similar shows. Not really funny either.

Score 3/10 for both (The OP song from Omamori and the ED song from Chu-Bra as well as the fact that playing an underwear club straight, while boring, is an interesting angle that doesn't really help the rest is what keeps the scores from being 0. Raise up two scores of you enjoy sterotypes of characters and middle schoolers flashing their panties)

These opinions are forced on no one and I hope you enjoyed reading *bows out*

(Seriously. Hidamaru Kindergarten. Watch it. It's Gainax. It's fun)

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUC-

*ahem*

The main problem with this, is you can't watch the actual episode until a weak after its original broadcast. And by actual episode, I mean POINTLESS PANNING, CROPPING, AND STILLFRAMING. It's literally impossible to dissect wtf's going on because the censored scenes are pivotal to what's going on.

Seeing the uncensored, yeah it'll probably turn off most viewers on rabroad. As a manga adaptation, it's accurate and the action's pretty good. But it's what I'd like to call a "Media Blaster dibs" show.

I just gained even more respect for you, garfield. I figured you were the one person who watched everything, but now you prove it and post an epicly long review of everything so far this season. Nothing that Crunchyroll didn't simulcast looked interesting enough to me to watch anyway, but I'll share some of my thoughts for what I have seen.

You obviously thought this out a lot, so I'm glad to see that you decided on this as your favorite so far, and, this case, it was the one that pretty much everyone knew would be the best, ever since we heard it was by the creators of Baccano. Of course we were all happy when it was found to be on CR, then confirmed. Due to internet problems, I haven't posted in the thread as much as most of the people who have, but now that I'm all caught up, I definitely will. I'll save most of my thoughts for that thread. This just keeps reminding me more and more of how much I need to buy that Baccano set.

I hate to say I called it, because as much as I kept point out that it was a new Gainax show (finally!) and even directed by Seiji Mizushima to boot, everything we had seen of it until it actually started forced me to admit that there was no way it could be as great as that corabination promised. I was still happy to see CR get it, since I at least had to watch the first episode. So there I was, about to watch the first episode, preparing to be disgusted by this show made for 5-year-olRAB, to never watch another episode, to, at this rate, maybe wait another year to hope Gainax went back to coming out with some great anime, to never again think that just because one of the best anime studios joined forces with one of the best directors, anything good would come from it. Then I watched the episode, and you know what? It was just like we all thought. It was by no means another anime full of everything Gainax and Mizushima have both proven themselves to be great at. It was a simple show about a kindergarten. And yet, I wasn't disgusted. It certainly didn't try to force any fanservice in, yet it didn't feel like I was way too old to be watching it. I think of it as less of a show for kindergartners about kindergartners and more of a slice-of-life show from the perspective of the adult male teacher. And you know what? I love good slice-of-life shows. While it wasn't nearly as good as I thought it would be when I heard who the creators were, it also wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be when presented with every piece of promotional material in the following time. Now I'm happy to be able to legally watch the first new Gainax show in nearly a year and not feel bad about it. And in the end of the second episode, we finally got proof this was Gainax. That ED and "see you next time" screen were definitely the best part of the series thus far, and it's all thanks to the fact that Gainax, among many other great attributes, loves to references other anime, usually other Gainax anime. I hope we see more of that kind of stuff, because that would turn this surprisingly fun and enjoyable show into a surprisingly fun and enjoyable show with a touch of "that's our Gainax".

I can't comment on most of that, since I haven't seen K-ON. And even after 3 episodes, I'm still not sure what I think of this show. I guess it's better than I expected, since I expected it to be all about the moe and maybe have some pointless moe fanservice, since that seemed like the only reason they'd make a military show with nothing but cute moe girls as the characters in the military, but it turned to be a pretty respectful show. However, because of that, I can't figure out the reasoning for it being made like that, since it's not used for comedic purposes, either. Overall, I'm glad to see it hasn't been pandering yet, but it also hasn't had much of anything happen yet. I'll keep watching it, since I have faith that something will happen eventually, but so far I've just found it to be a nice, artistic way to waste a half-hour.

Chu-Bra. It's a show about 12-year-old girls' underwear. I have nothing else to say. As for Omamori Himari, I had slightly higher hopes, since it actually had a plot other than "FANSERVICE DEVICE", but the plot is generic at best and is usually used as a complement to the fanservice, if not absent in favor of fanservice altogether.

And there we go. Not only do you have thoughtful things to say about all the new anime, but, as I often find to be the case, I agree with almost all of it. Good job, sir.

Well, thank you for reading sir.

Yes, Tae. It exists. We must recognize it.

Really who does that? That's not even advertising for the DVD's anymore, that's just plain insensitivity corabined with executives just not caring.

It's basically moronic, because of how savy otaku-ism is, they'll just go straight to the uncensored broadcasting on the show's website, making it air on television a complete waste of money.

I never wanted steam clouRAB so much until now.

I seriously suggest Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu. Its the funniest show I've watched in a while and by far my favorite new show this season.

Heh. Remeraber when calling a show "otaku" used to mean that it was exceedingly and overly cerebral?

I guess this is another example of "you get what you wish for".
