"Winnie the Pooh and Christmas Too" Talkback

It's finally back on, but in an edited form (natch). The most peculiar edits were those done to LENGTHEN time; they added a new storybook opening to the front and they also added cheesy "We'll be right back!" bumpers that consisted of a still frame of Pooh's painted-on tree.

One establishing shot of Pooh's house and the entire Gopher scene are gone, so the Hundred Acre Wood's unusually decorated Christmas tree just suddenly appears. Most perplexing--and most annoying--is the fact that they've stuck a permanent "ABC E/I" bug onto the upper right corner. How on Earth is anything in this educational?

If I sound cranky, I have a right to be. As late as one decade ago, they were showing this uncut (back when they filled the extra space in the hour with a couple of "New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" cartoons). I had a nice tape of that which I used to make this comparison. Then, after I was finished, the VCR/DVD combo proceeded to CHEW UP MY TAPE TO HOLY HELL.

No screencaps for you. Ever.

I haven't seen this in quite a while (although I have watched the New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and the original 1977 film quite recently). I remember liking it, although feeling really bad for Pooh at some point towards the end, when he's alone and possibly lost on his journey. I can't remember any specifics really, but I did enjoy it last time I saw it.

Probably would've watched this, if I were at home by myself, instead of at my mom's house with other people.

Where I live, a guy my age who still likes Winnie the Pooh is considered to be gay :(

I'm pretty disappointed that ABC didn't start re-airing this until yesterday, and even then it seemed like an afterthought. I haven't seen this for years, myself. I used to have a video of it, which included a making of the Muppet Christmas Carol movie. But that one is gone. I think I have it 2 more times on tape, including the official released one.

But seriously. The way the market the heck out of WTP, you'd think this special would be on every year, and we'd have it on DVD (with the rest of the Adventures of Winnie the Pooh). But sadly such is not the case. In fact I was really delighted to see they put it on after the Shrek encore.

I forget. I haven't seen the new Adventures series for years. Where the little grubworms that were after Rabbit's carrots from that series? I don't recall them in any of the short films.

I have to agree. I liked the hour version of the special better. If they had done that, they probably wouldn't have needed to edit out the Gopher part. I think the main reason for the cuts is that, 'Shrek the Halls,' seemed to drag on a little too long. They should have put the two specials in seperate time slots. Maybe had an hour for each of those.

For that matter wasn't STH on for an hour the first time it aired? I only caught it the second time so forgive my ignorance.

Sucks that the movie was so badly edited. And you're right, the E/I thing makes no sense whatsoever.

This is one of my favorite Christmas specials. I've seen it hundreds of times and it never fails to make me smile. I really hope it gets a DVD release sometime soon.

I'm lucky. I still have a video of this special that I taped back in 1991. Not only is it uncut (at least, I'm pretty sure its uncut...) it has old commercials, a bunch of Donald Duck cartoons, and a preview for Beauty and the Beast! :D

Well, maybe someone could put the edited parts of the special up on You Tube. It has been a while since I've seen the part with Gopher on that show. It would be good to see that again.
