Windows Vista Gadgets: How do you get your own pictures on the slide show?

I have the slide show gadget on my Vista but it won't let me put my own pictures in there, only the samples that come with the computer. My pictures are all in my external hard drive. Do they have to be in my computer for them to be in the slide show?
 
yes they have to be on your computer in a file then the computer will be able to find them
