Windows Media Player Error?

I am trying to rip CDs to my computer. I want to be able to put the MP3s on to my MP3 player. I own the CDs, but they are old (old being 7-10 years old). I keep getting error code C00D10D2 (Windows Media Player cannot rip the track because a compatible MP3 encoder is not installed on your computer. Install a compatible MP3 encoder or choose a different format to rip to (such as Windows Media Audio).
I have had success ripping it as a WMA file, however these don't work on my MP3 player... Could it be the age of the CDs, or is there some thing else I can use to rip these?
Again, I OWN the CD's
