Movie bosses have told William Shatner that he can no longer boldly go where he has been before. He wanted to appear in a cameo role in the proposed new Star Trek film but movie moguls have told him it's time for him to beam up.

People seem to forget that Kirk died in the 7th film ('Generations'). So it would be a bit hard for Spock and Kirk to reminisce about the past if Kirk is dead.
