Will you return your H@H/8320?

for my router, i picked the router up at a tmo retail store and they had the rebates there. i just checked www.tmobilerebates.com and it seems like it's listed but it's not pulling up. so your best bet would be to pop into a tmo retail location and pick one up from them

i actually found the pdf for the rebate on that site... it worked... thanks. PS. the site says free overnight and 2 day shipping, but its not true. 2 day is 5.99 and overnight is 11.99.... dont forget about tax too.

Hi all,

I was on the phone with Tmo support last night a few times. It seems there is a bug, and that the 8320 will disconnect for voice calls from UMA, even though it keeps the data calls over wifi.

Frankly, I wonder if this is a bug - I have an unlimited data plan, and coincidentally, that goes over my non-Tmo network just fine, but my minutes get used even though I'm well in range of my UMA enabled H@H network. Hmmm.

Well, here's what they said.

It's a known problem.

The solution, go to manage connections, and uncheck wifi. Wait for the wifi icon to disappear on the homescreen (which remains in the background), then recheck the wifi checkbox. You do not have to leave the manage connections app, but... the first time I did this, in order for UMA to pickup, I had to remove the battery, wait a minute, and restart the phone.

The Tmo customer service rep explained, it's a good idea to turn off the phone once a day anyways... something about updates being pushed the phone when I do? Never heard of such a thing, but now I turn my baby off once a day (or more), just for the hell of it.

My personal experience with this is that it drops the UMA quite often, but doing the uncheck/recheck does reconnect it reliably. I'm a bit annoyed, because it means I'm using minutes when I should be, but... tmo does have the best rates/plans. It is quite cool when it works though. And, I'm using my own router. My battery life is a full day plus, with the standard battery (I've though of updating to an OEM battery, same width, but longer battery life. no need yet.).

Call quality is very good over UMA - signal strenght is eh. But, it works in my NYC apartment. And, I don't really care about a hand-off between edge and UMA, I'd just like to have UMA work all the time when I'm in range.

Email me if there are other questions, I don't check the forum much.

The rep I spoke w/ (we're probably speaking with the same guys as their tier 3 only has a handful of support folks) also said that hard resets are advisable (powering down by yanking the battery) as it powers down the wifi antenna and this can also clear out issues.

Well, I'm a new TMO/8320/H@H user, and yes, it has been quirky, both with and without their router.. i haven't had any handoff issues on calls or data, my only issues have been that evne w/ "Wifi Prefered", sitting in front of an AP, it will hang onto edge unless you nudge it along... as a coworker puts it.. "4.3 can't come fast enough"... I hope that will help fix a lot of these issues, since it's supposed to have a lot of WiFi fixes.. we've only had TMO since last week... we've used *2* of our 700 mins.. the rest have been faves and mostly H@H.. It seems to be very touchy about signal quality, but otherwise it's fine.. So i'm probably keeping ours.. All new tech has it's issues... I'm giving TMO the benefit of the doubt for now.. They can't be any worse than the V company we came from....

I have absolutely no problems with my AT&T 2Wire 2700-BG. I've done tons of UMA calls through it. No problem.

I read this last night....

How does the hotspot at home plan really work?
The below examples presume you have the unlimited calling from wi-fi.

1. You can't use it from anyplace that requires you log in with a
browser - all communication from the phone is via UDP to and from port
4500 on a central server, and usually to and from port 4500 on the
phone, although it puts up with NAT port translation. Nothing escapes,
including local web access - this probably means that all packets are
encapsulated - sort of like a VPN. Because it is a VPN, it is essential,
for reliability, that it uses UDP and not TCP. There are technical
explanations as to why, but I was glad to see that they made that
decision. If you do not know why, well, take my word for it. You can't
reliably stack a reliable protocol inside another reliable one -
eventually the retries will cause a meltdown.

It seems to be hashed or encrypted. Even web access goes via 4500. The
downside is that I can't make calls at a hotspot that requires me to log
in with guest/guest like the one at my auto dealer. If one had a laptop
that could masquerade the wi-fi MAC, you might be able to fake the mac
and log in and then switch the mac on the laptop. The cell is still
locked in to its mac.

No problems here on any network. I haven't had any handoff issues either. I will run around just to make it hand off sometimes for the fun of it.

My data on WiFi is so much faster, my friends without WiFi are jealous.

I love my 8320 and UMA

one thing to make sure of (that I reread last night on a couple things).. is to make sure to flip on Intra-AP Handoff, so if you're doing a multi AP setup, or are at somewhere that is using multiple APs using WDS for distribution. It can handoff properly and not linger on 1 AP till it dies..

fwiw, it's pretty apparent there are compatability issues. heck, the Curbe (and H@H for that mater) just came out. but after spending as much time as i could over the past 2 wks to try to make the wi-fi 90% functional, i just said to my self, "self, it ain't worth it." wi-fi protocols are pretty x-platform. t-mo has a very cool service (H@H) but if ya gotta tinker for more than a cpl of hours... it's not ready for prime time. if you can't get it to function as advertised more or less outta the box, it hasn't been developed fully enough, IMO.

i returned mine today, 2 wks to the day. sorry, but i'll stay tuned to see if they get the kinks ironed out and may return in a few months.

Area51;457125']I totally agree, even if my h@h doesnt work well now and I have to be a ginnie pig for them i dont care cause the investment is saving tons of though and money AND minutes may i add. I actually got the $9.99 h@h promotion on it's last day and will be getting my tmo router this friday, wooooooot!

..and there are those of us who could use it to work with our exisiting (read current state-of-tech) who may feel it was rushed to mkt. glad you're enjoying, but for some us, it's a dissapointment.

I was in the same boat with you. Dropped calls in UMA mode, TMO said they were working on that.

My biggest beef was having to MANUALLY set the browser from Internet Browser to WiFi in order to use my home WiFi. If the BB is smart enough to sense when it's in range of my home Wifi and switch to UMA mode, it should also allow me a setting to automagically switch the device browser as well.

And why the H can't I turn off UMA and still use my home WiFi connection for the browser. What about all the Curve users out there who don't care to add another $9/month on their bill but would like to use WiFi for the data?

If I'm gonna throw down $450 for a device it should be ready for prime time. Why should you(the BB community) have to wait for the next OS release in order for RIM/TMO to make fixes that should have been in there in the first place?!

So I got me an 8800. The GPS rocks and I don't miss having to fight UMA on my 8320. Maybe I'll jump again when the BB 9xxx series is released....

I'm pretty much stuck either way it goes, I refuse to pay 19.95 for H@H, I rarely use the phone, when I am connected, UMA, I cannot get calls, T-Mo asks if the router came from them, I'm just sick of this curve. I like my 8800.

After 2 weeks, I will just sell the curve, pass that headache along to someone else. It's nice, don't get me wrong, but I am not into all this anymore.

Maybe some other time, the phone was a gift, cannot send it back....
