Will Verizon let me upgrade early from Alltel to Verizon?

My mother and I are both experiencing problems with our Alltel phones. She is eligible for an upgrade and I still have a year left on mine.

If we go to the Verizon store, will they let us upgrade early if we switch to Verizon?
