I've just discovered that the IRS made a mistake regarding my taxes. In 2000, I underpaid my taxes by $300. In 2005, they collected over $700 from me, which they claimed was the original $300 I owed, plus penalties and interest. However, the 2001 tax credit I received (the one that President Bush hailed as "your money") was only $15, which was about $300 less than it should have been. Therefore, the IRS had already collected from me what it owed.
Can I get that $700 back now? I mean, it has been almost four years, but this was their mistake.
