Will Sprint tell me if a phone has been reported lost/stolen?

I am looking to buy a used Samsung Exclaim from somebody on Craigslist. Before I pay for it, I'd like to make sure it has never been reported lost/stolen because I know people who have had that happen & the phone can never be activated. If I have the serial number & I call Sprint, will they disclose that information?
