My Papa’s Waltz by Thomas Roethke
Paraphrase/Summary: “My Papa’s Waltz”, is about a boy who is celebrating with his father as they dance joyfully around the room and his mother looks at them upset. It also is about a boy who is abused by his father, and the mother is helpless as her son is beaten. Theodore Roethke used a duality in the poem “My Papa’s Waltz.”
Theme/Idea: The theme of this poem is memories, it allows the reader to reminisce about the time they shared with their father when they were younger. It also has a theme of abuse, the word choice such as; “battered knuckle” gives the reader more of a hurtful tone then joy. These two themes both share a similarity which makes the third theme love, the duality Theodore Roethke uses is the poem can be interpreted as joy or abuse. Yet, both share the love for their father children have. Whether they are joyous and lovable to each other, where love is apparent or the father continuously hurts his child the reader can still connect with love. Even if the father destroys his child’s self esteem, the child still feels love towards his father and can’t change that. This was Theodore Roethke’s purpose of the duality in “My Papa’s Waltz.”
