I will be riding my bike everyday for one hour. I was jogging and power walking but lately my legs have been really hurting me. I want to make sure I get a good work out will riding the bike be as effective as jogging and power walking has been

As effective as you want it to be. Some of the greatest conditioned athletes in the world are cyclists. Far better conditioned than a walker.

'Nuff said.

if you ride one hour at a reasonable pace (60 to 80% of your max heart rate) you will get a good workout. of course if you are getting ready for a marathon, that won't be enough. you will probably burn about 250 to 350 calories, again depending upon your heart rate, etc. if you don't have a heart rate monitor, you can pick up a very basic unit pretty cheap. i personally don't go for all the expensive features on some of them--just want to know what my heart is doing.

Cycling burns up a lot more calories than walking and it's far more effective at increasing your aerobic fitness and stamina not to mention what I regard as the most important thing it's a lot more fun.

Sure. But it doesn't have to be an all or nothing proposition. Who says you can run one day and bike the next? Or maybe ride for an hour, then run 20 minutes, getting the benefit of both?

You body only knows how hard you go and how long you do it. The exercise doesn't matter. If you do at the same heart-rate for the same amount of time, you will burn the same amount of calories. So if you go out and ride hard you will burn calories and reap the benefits.
