Will protein shakes alone , be effective? Or must I exercise in conjunction?

If I were to drink a protein shake ( every other day) without any exercising , what results would I see in the terms of gaining muscle mass ?

If I ( Continue ) to ride my bike three times a week ( an hour each time I ride) and take 40 minute walks every other night.... in conjunction with drinking the shake every other day.

What results if any would I see, and how long before I see them ?
