Will playstation 1 memory cards work in Ps2's?

I just bought a ps2 today and my old ps1 memory card wouldn't work...whenever i tried to save something it there was not memory card in slot 1....i was just wondering before i go off and buy a new ps2 memory card if i did something wrong...and yes it was in the ps2 and yes it was in the right spot...
i am playing a playstation 1 game and using an playstation 1 memory card...what gives?
 
The PS1 memory cards are only able to save PS1 game data and cannot save PS2 game data; PS2 memory cards are only able to save PS2 game data and cannot save PS1 game data.
