Will Pirates 3 Outgross Pirates 2?

Last year POTC 2 became only the third film ever to make a Billion worldwide and is now the third biggest grossing film ever behind Titanic and return Of The King. I think most were quite amazed that POTC 2 reached such epic figures. So how do you think the new film At WorlRAB End will do? Will it surpass the figure for Dead Mans Chest or could it not do as well as expected? It will be one of the biggest hits of the year. But will it be quite as big given that a lot of people were disappointed by the second one?

In the UK I was quite pleased that Casino Royale eventually outgrossed it as it was the better film. This year it is competing with Harry Potter among others. So who will be the box office champ of 2007 both here and worldwide?

I think it will have a tough time - this is a really good year for movies.

However that said once the old Disney advertising machine rev's up you wont be able to get out of bed for seeing adverts etc

I think it may just pip Spiderman 3 and Chrek to the post in the long run.

Pirates has a bigger demographic. Reasons.

*Generally boys want to be pirates and therefor will be salvating at the fact that Captain Jack is back with his final adventure.

*People WANT to see how it enRAB. Like LOTR whether you loved it or hated it, you want to see how the trilogy concludes.

*Women want to see Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp back as these swashbuckling heroes. So they will 'reluctantly' go along with their partners to see this film.

*There is a greater chance that people will go back to see this in repeat viewing, rather than spiderman and Shrek which have had lukewarm reviews. I've seen mostly positive reviews for this film.

Now this is just my opinion and nothing scientific.

I think it will do better than Spiderman and Shrek 3 as well because

1) Johnny Depp has a huge following who will go and see it
2) Orlando Bloom has a huge following who will go and see it same as Keira Knightley has a big portion of fans
3) Some Rolling Stones fans might want to see it for Keith RicharRAB
4) Like Lost_In_Greys said it's part of a trilogy, and we are pretty sure that this might be the last unlike Spiderman, so that might encourage people more
5) It is getting better reviews than Dead Man's Chest, and that broke recorRAB
6) Again, it's getting better reviews than both SpiderMan and Shrek, where people thought SpiderMan 2 was better, and Shrek 2 were better than these new movies, like I said in 5) At World's End is getting better reviews than the last outing

.... I agree with you all.. but also, theres something else important that will help it beat POTC2 - the snowball effect.
Everyone who went out and saw POTC2 when it came out broke the recorRAB, but then there are people who bought into the franchise since then (for example I didn't get into Harry Potter until the 4th book, and joined the masses queueing for the fifth), thus creating a snowball effect.

IMO no chance it will outgross Pirates 2. The film had a lukewarm reception, and this one wont top the first in terms of reception.
The grosses for Spidey 3 & Shrek 3 will most likely be much lower (in the US) and this will follow trend.

I doubt it very much...mainly because the second film didn't live up to the hype. ReminRAB me of the Matrix - Matrix Reloaded grossed a hell of a lot of money - about 800M I think, but because it didn't meet the hype, Revolutions did poorly in comparisson (though it still made a crapload of money). I predict the same will happen with Pirates...although I really hope the third isn't a major disappointment

Generally, I get fed up with all the attention spent on box office takings. When tickets prices are rising continually how can anyone realistically compare the likes of Shrek 2 and 3 for example?
I'd rather know how many people physically went to see a film - good old bums on seats.

saw it at midnight last night, and i can say that i was not that impressed, a bit slow and boring really. watchable and funny in some places but predictable and un-interesting at the same time..

Keira Knightley does not have a large, loyal fanbase. She's a very beautiful woman but has absolutely no commanding screen presence. It wouldn't have made a difference if she was in PotC or not. People are going to see the movie - not because she's in it - but because they want to see Johnny Depp reprise the role of Jack Sparrow, they want to see huge special effects and maybe, just maybe, a good story.

I think PotC 3 will do fine. I'm not sure if it will do better than the 1st or 2nd film but it will certainly do ok.

Orlando Bloom big following? lol
He has zero box office draw. All the films that he's come in that have made money are epics with an all-star cast. Kingdom of Heaven = flop....Elizabethtown = flop

he isnt a star in his own right.

well opening weekend, its already 10 million behind Pirates 2 was at this stage (in the US)
no doubt the triple bill of shrek, spidey & pirates is all hurting each other ...they woulda made less anyway because they are 2nd sequels, but all 3 being out together doesnt help

I thought it was dark (much more so than anything in the previous two) but that made it much more effective: You don't see anything so it's really only implied, neither of my children (aged 11 and 8) were particularly bothered by it - the hanging scene in the first movie was far more graphic really, it's only because a child is involved that anyone's even making an issue of this one

I saw it on Friday and really enojyed it. Yes, it was dark, but it was good.

I liked the fact it didn't try to be all light and fluffy.

Some bits were predictable but the fate of one particular character really did surprise me......

I think Becket should be up there as one cool villan and his fate was particularly cool.

I wanted to find out what happened and this wrapped it up

Well estimates are that it's made $332 million worldwide this weekend which is pretty good going.

I don't think it will outdo the 2nd since there's more competition for it this time in other films, but I think it will be right up then in the top 10 takings wise.
