It looks like I'm getting into the Air Force - and as lame as it might sound, I have a dog, a Miniature Schnauzer... We have an amazing bond. He sleeps with me at night (with my fiance', too of course!), he follows me EVERYWHERE. He loves to be with me - and he seems to "listen" (even though he doesn't understand what I'm saying to him.. heh)
I never understood until I got him why they call dogs "Man's Best Friend"... but I'm feeling the call of duty and I must answer. I have been his only "mommy" - and we've had him since he was a baby dog. He favours me over my fiance' - but they still get along great. He's a "Mama's boy"
Do you think he will remember me when I come home? Will our bond still be as strong as it was before I leave? I don't have a date set for shipping off, but I do think about it a lot. Some say TOO much, but I really love this dog. I love him so much - and if he forgets me it will crush my heart.
My father went to IRAQ at the very very beginning of the war - and when he came home his beloved dog didn't recognize him... not at first... he was gone for quite some time... she growled and acted defensive towards him - but eventually I think it kicked in - or they "rekindled" that bond they once had. He loves his dog just like I love mine. She followed him everywhere. He took her for drives... same situation with me and my Schnauzer. My dad's dog is a German Shepherd/Rottweiler mix - and he's the only owner she's ever known. (though she was a family dog - she formed a special bond with my dad)
Will there be a period of time where he'll need to get... used to me again? Anyone else have experiences that might help me with mine?
Thank you all!
