I know an unlocked GSM phone will work on GSM networks but does that include prepaid networks? If I got an unlocked GSM phone, would I be able to activate it through AT&T's GoPhone service? I want to get a new phone but I have Sprint and their phone selection sucks. I just don't want to change providers. It'd probably be easier to get an unlocked phone and use prepaid than switch services.
 
Pre-Paid and Post-Paid Service both run off the same network, you can use any GSM phone for either service, but if you are wanting to use an AT&T phone you can not bring it over to Sprint. The two companies run on completely different networks. If you bought an unlocked GSM phone you would only be able to use it on AT&T, T-Mobile or one of the other smaller GSM companies.

Oh...I know it won't work on Sprint. I am considering cancelling my sprint service cuz it's too expensive, buying an unlocked GSM phone (cuz they're 293876928364798267349867234 times cooler than CDMA phones) and activating it on AT&T's GoPhone service so I don't have to pay the insane security deposit they want from me, I won't have a bill to worry about and I'll have a kick ass phone. I thought this would work...makes sense to me...but I wasn't sure.

Has anyone else ever done anything like this?

If you get a phone with both the 850 MHz band and 1900 MHz band, it should work on AT&T. Many of the European or Asian phones might not have the 850 MHz band. Your reception will suffer because much of the 1900 MHz band is used for 3G in the areas where both bands are in use.
