Will I loose all paid for Google Market Place apps if I root my HTC Desire?

I want to Root my Android phone mainly because I want to install anything I like.
But how does it effect Google Market place?

I know it will completely wipe my phone but if I go back into Google Market place and sign it will it download them again?
