Will I have to pay back my rebate to Chrysler if I turn in my car before the year is up?

I drive a Dodge Caliber R/T. I cannot afford the payments any longer. I was thinking about trading my car in. I have only had the car since June. My dad works for Chrysler and said that I would have to pay back my Greenslip if I did not keep it for at least a year. Is this true. And if it is...why do they do that. Im trying to trade my car for something a little but easier to afford..! I hope someone can help me with this problem..

Only the dealer knows; if you continue to go to Chrysler they might be able to take all or part of it back. But if you go to another dealer and trade the Dodge in, Chrysler would have no say in the matter. You are going to be "upside down" at this point, owing more than the car is worth. But dealers are anxious to "deal" in today's market for any kind of sale so don't give up. Sorry, but Chrysler products don't get the best reviews. I suggest you read Consumer Reports and find the one that best suits your needs and that you can afford. It might still be a Dodge product; just not an R/T model.
