will ducatis with undertail exhaust run better with exhaust on the sides like normal

bikes? if so, why would they decide to stick with undertail exhausts?
if not, does this mean exhaust pipe length doesn't affect engine performance? the front cylinder seems to have very long pipe before reaching the silencer.
