Will driving my 97 dodge dakota with the heater core out damage the engine?

My vents are blowing out smelly coolant smell but my truck isn't over heating.i cannot find any diagrams as to how to fix the heater core so i need to keep driving it to work.will any damage occur?I keep it filled with water.
 
No it won't but don't just keep adding water buy a anti-freeze tester and test the coolant properly make sure you don't mix it more then 50/50 and it should be mixed for -40 temperatures in winter.
