Will Apple cover a hardware defect if my iPhone is scratched?

I bought my iPhone when it was first released in July of 2007, which means it is still eligible under Apple's one year warranty. I have recently had problems with my home key. Basically it takes a very HARD pressing to make the home key work. My iPhone has endured some wear and tear over the months and there are noticable scratches and dents. I'm hoping Apple will still cover the home key defect even though I have dropped the phone a number of times. Have any of you had similar issues, and has Apple repaired the phone despite minor scratches to the body of the phone?

Any feedback is appreciated.
