Will a t-mobile straight up prepaid SIM card work in a sidekick 2008 or 3?

I was wondering if i could take my t-mobile straight up prepaid SIM card put it into a sidekick 2008 or 3 and have it work without any problems and still be able to put prepaid cards onto it. Also will it erase everything if i turn it off because that's what the t-mobile people said or is this to try to get me to spend money?
