Will a T-mobile G1 work without Internet/Data Plan?

I have a T-mobile Tap currently. This phone does not feature a QWERTY keyboard, so I asked my Mom if I could have her T-mobile G1 since she has a new phone now. She let me have it yesterday and she got a call or text or something from T-mobile today saying that they were going to activate the internet. My Mom thinks that "Google" powers the phone. I told her that "Android" powers the phone, not Google. I have looked online at many places to check and see if the G1 could be used without the data plan. They all said that, yes indeed, it will work without the data plan. All I want to be able to do is text and make phone calls. Google access is a feature of the phone and does not power the phone. Yes, the phone did make me set up a G-mail account at Start-up after I factory reset the phone. Can anyone help me out and just let me know if I can make phone calls and text on this phone without the Data Plan/internet.

(I also saw on the previous websites that you can connect to Wi-Fi and it will NOT cost you anything on your phone bill) Is this true? I have Wi-Fi at home, so I could connect to that. I need to know these things ASAP. Thanks!

Btw, this is a serious question....Serious answers please.
