...until I can get a service tech? My mother is out of town for the week and I am taking care of her house and her pets while she is away. My grandmother also lives in the house and has been hearing a strange noise coming from the heat pump.

I heard it twice today myself, and noticed it seems to be happening when the heat is shutting off. It sounds kind of like a train coming to a stop or like someone is throwing on the brakes. It only lasts a few seconds, but is very loud.

I couldn't get to the outside unit, but I opened the inside unit and everything looks fine. Last winter when the heat went out we noticed that the inside unit was covered with ice, but that is not the case this time. The heat itself is actually working fine now.

I know this situation definitely requires a service call, but I'm wondering if it can wait until my mom gets home 5 days from now. This isn't the first time the heat pump has had problems so she was thinking about replacing it anyway, but that kind of decision has to be made by her once she is home.

My grandmother and I just need to know if it is safe for her to stay in the house and use the heat for a few more days. She never leaves the house and is not comfortable staying anywhere else, but she's also worried about this turning into a fire hazard.

Does anyone know if it's possible for a heat pump to catch on fire? I was always under the impression that a heat pump would just stop working if you continue to use it when something is wrong, but I need to be sure. Thanks
