Will a gas tank from a newer Yamaha Virago fit on a 1982 XV920?

I'm looking to modify my 1982 Yamaha Virago XV920. I saw some pictures of a modified Virago that was listed as a 1982 XV920, but the gas tank and wheels on it looked identical to a 85 or maybe 96 virago. Can I do this to mine? It needs a new gas tank, but If I can put the tank from a newer virago on it, that's what I want to do. I know the seat won't look right, but I want to modify that eventually too.
What mods will I have to perform?
