Will a bad credit history prevent you from becoming a police officer?

I had bad credit and a lot of accounts that went to collections and one charge off. All the debt was under 5k. I paid off all outstanding debts and all accounts have a zero balance. However some still don't say Satisfactory but is does say paid in full... will this stop me from becoming a police officer. I have paid off my last account this month... should I wait before applying?
