will a 42 re transmission fit in a 96 dodge dakota?

i have a 96 dodge Dakota with a blown trans. it has a 42 re transmission and after some research i found that the 99 also has one. some one i no is junking one with that trans and it was just rebuilt but the truck was in an accident. so i was wondering if the trans would work in my truck even tho it is from a different year
