Will a 3g iphone work well on t-mobile?

My girlfriends phone broke, and the cost to fix it is almost as much as me buying her a 3g 8gb iPhone for her.

I was wondering if the iPhone (which i know uses 2100 MHz frequency) would work with t-mobile. I believe t-mobile also runs 2100 MHz frequencies, plus a 1700 MHz. So assuming the phone is unlocked would t-mobile run fine on it? Data wise that is.
