I have a second generation (1998-2001) Nissan Altima (limited edition). I want to put 20 inch rims on it, but I also to to be able to ride comfortably. I dont mind having to take a few extra seconds over a speed bump, or avoiding pot holes, etc, but I just want to be able to drive without shaking like an epiliptic

No, having larger rims means you have to have lower profile tires. So next time you hit a bump at a fast speed there won't be enough cushion in the tire thus you'll end up bending your fresh rims. Also the smaller tires will absorb less bumps and put more work on your shocks. So your ride will be rougher.
