Wide screen TV but not wide view?

Could someone PLEASE tell me why, when viewing my "wide screen" tv I cannot see the right and left edges. It's very frustrating when, for instance, two people are having a conversation and both should be in shot but you can only see the whole of one of them and the other is off the screen. I have tried altering the aspect ratio and none of the settings seem to help. Why does this happen? It's so annoying
