...honored veterans? I've been to third-world countries with better care than the VA Hospitals typically provide.
If this is what our government considers a standard of quality that has been EARNED by its recipients, what makes you think that they should/would provide equal or better care to Jane Q. Welfare-Rat or John Q. Couch-Potato?
@wizard09: I believe my own 2 eyes more than your words. I'm a veteran who pays full cost for the great care every American receives at his local hospital. The VA sucks -- I speak from experience.
@ botsy -- Brits think they have great care, too. Anything can seem good without having a real quality hospital to compare it to. I drive 20 miles past the VA to be seen at a teaching hospital.
@ ash -- I'm not sure if you really don't get what I'm driving at.
Socialized medicine sucks. Expanding it to include everyone would make all but the top 15% see a drop in quality of care, but would mandate costs equivalent to around 15% payroll tax -- which would all but prevent the working class access to a quality of care currently available in almost any city to even bums and illegals.
Wait times to see a specialist are mind-boggling at the VA. The last 2 times I went to be scheduled, it was a 6-month wait -- each time. Both times I went to the nearest teaching hospital and saw a specialist within 24 hours -- with NO insurance, just a promise to pay.
