just came back from a year in SE asia and met a lot, no actually a tonne of people who had booked a tour for 3 months with a company from their home country and had paid more for it than i had spent in a year.... and they still had to bring spending money
why would anyone do this?
surely backpacking is about new experiences, discovering the undiscovered (although its been done a million times before anyway), challenging yourself. Can booking a tour where all hotels, all problems are sorted for you, all travel, all visa's (at three times the price) are taken care of really be classed as travelling?
so many people on there gap 'yaaar' refuse to learn anything about the place they're in, drop bucketloads of money and get drunk every night for 3 months.
suppose i shouldn't be complaining as it keeps them to the touristy areas, but i'd still rather they weren't there at all.
met one guy who hadn't eaten asian food for 2 months. lived on sausage and chips, ommelettes and rice
