Why would my 3-year-old child was distressed before going on stage at a school play?

The playschool which my three-year-old son attends put on a play today for the end of the school year. Just before going on stage he was crying, and it took him a few moments to stop. Although I did notice that he did stop and smile when he saw me waving. Why would a small child be distressed like this?
