Why would I need MSSQL or ASP for my website?

I intend to build my small professional website using the webhost's site builder. There is a choice of identically priced Windows or Linux hosting packages. The only difference I can see is that Windows has MSSQL and ASP. But what exactly would I use these for? I'd ask the webhost but I know I won't understand their reply!
