Why would he say no? Is he playing games or just more old-fashioned than I thought?

I've been with my boyfriend for few months now and we're doing really good. He tells me how I'd be a good wife one day and how beautiful, smart, special, unique... everything a woman would love to hear and I feel the exact same way about him, he's just perfect to me, all his flaws are wonderful in my eyes, he's the most gorgeous and motivated man I've been with. There's only one problem, he works sooo much. We talk for at least 4 hrs. a day but we only get to see each other once or twice a week. It's really starting to get to me but it's not like i haven't expressed that and we both understand each other. Well to cut to the chase, I offered my apartment key and he said no. He's slightly old-fashioned, no living together till marriage, etc. but I just want him to be able to sneak in in the middle of the night so i can wake up and see his smile and so he won't feel bad that he might wake me up to let him in. But he said no, i don't understand why. If he likes me as much as says he does and sees a future with me, why wouldn't he accept the key from me?
He always sleeps over the 1 or 2 times i get to see him so i know that's not the issue and he does come to my house in the middle of the night but he has to wake me up and there are times especially when I have a long day the next day that I don't want to be woken up.
