Why would God put a the tree in the garden?

The tree of knowledge of good and evil. Why would God put this in the garden? What good could possibly come of it?
Adam and Eve had no idea it was even good to listen to God in the first place, so isn't this like putting a loaded shotgun in room with a couple of retards?
 
It was a test? Adam and Eve Knew how powerful GOD was if you were in the white house would you not listen to the president? he can have you arrested and torture and no one would know.
 
A garden is where trees typically go, n-est ce pas?

Ok... so... Adam and Eve were created... told NOT to eat the fruit of that tree, by some random guy with a beard that they had no idea who he was... and they ate it anyway? Well from what I can gather, I'd say God is pretty damn stupid. but no offense! ;D
