why would a 98 Mazda 626 run in park but not drive?

the car will run for 15 minutes in park but when i go to put it in drive it stales out.
the car idles fine in park but when i got in to drive it stale out it is NOT a tranny problem i am not that dumb i know what a bad tranny feels like i had a few go out on me on other cars this is an Idleing problem.
 
If you mean that it drives in park then the gear lever adjustment is way off

If you mean that it won't idle in drive, then there is too much drag in the torque converter. That sounds ugly unless you haven't given it fresh ATF (auto transmission fluid) for a long, long time.

Off to the mechanic.
