why wont windows media player play videos from my camcorder?

I recently just bought a new camcorder..a sony hdd model #DCR-SR47 . uploading the videos onto my dell laptop is easy. but when i play the videos through windows media player there is no audio. I took the camera to a friends who also has a laptop an hp...and the audio works fine.. I dont know what to try.. any ideas?
 
It might play if you download codecs. I would get VLC Media Player. Its free and I use it for everything and never use Windows Media Player. You can download it at videolan.org
