Why won't the backslash on the xBox 360 chat pad work while playing Final Fantasy XI?

I recently got Final Fantasy XI for the 360, however, when I try to whisper a friend with the Chat Pad (by typing /tell [name]), the game kind of prevents me from doing the /. When I push the square button to use punctuation, it simply won't let me type anything!
Does anyone have any insight as to why this is?
