Why won't redsn0w 0.9.10b6 recognisde my device is in DFU mode?

version 0.9.10b4 recognises it in DFU mode but cannot work with iOS5.1, neither can 0.9.10b5. I can't downgrade the software on the 3GS iPhone handset because even after editing /private/etc/hosts file itunes says "the build is not compatible with the device". 0.9.10b6 just says "no device in DFU mode detected. you probably misunderstood the instructions".
