Why won't .rar files extract/work on the sims 3 for mac (custom content) ?

Hi, on mac lion for custom content in the sims 3, zip files work fine, but when I try to extract .rar (tried about 5 extraction programs) the files, when placed in the downloads folder don't work at all (.zip files do). I go through documents/EA games/documents, never tried making a Mods and packages folder through transgramming which most people say to do, would they work there? Is there a way to extract the .rar files to make them work? Thanks for any advice
