I have a 2001 Suzuki Bandit 1200 K1. I bought it last week and it had been standing since October. It started ok when I bought it. .It was missing a bit in mid range so I ran it with some redex in it and it seemed to cure the problem. But then it developed a backfire and now won't start at all, there is a spark, fuel is in it, the kill switch isn't on, what can I check next. When I try to start it turnsover but won't start and then backfires from the exhaust

From you description is sounds like the problem has something to do with your ignition system. If the bike has been standing for all this time there is a strong possibility that there might be damp in the ignition system somewhere. The easiest solution would be to spray all exposed wires (including spark plugs and leads) with DW40 or a similar water repellant spray. I had a similar problem with my bike and this easy fix sorted it for me.
