Why won't my mom let me walk to school?

Hi, I'm in high school now and I can almost drive. Until then I am walking to school. We live less than half a mile away, and I take a back entrance to a school that other kids take as well, so that way I can just walk through my neighborhood to get to school. We live in a very safe community, in one of the nicer/richer areas of my city. I even have a friend that walks to school, too. My mom is worried about this and won't let me walk to school unless she comes with me (which frankly is very embarassing!). She thinks it is too dangerous and that I will get kidnapped or raped or something on the way to school, even though we know most of the people who live in this neighborhood and they are all friendly people. I know she is just being a protective mom, but what I don't get is that she lets me walk home FROM school. If I'm walking from school why can't I go TO school? That makes no sense in my mind. Plus I will be able to drive soon, which she doesn't have a problem with, even though driving is way more dangerous.

Do you think my mom is being unreasonable? Or do you think she is correct?
