why won't my jeep start?

Here's what i know! I have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a straight 6 engine. It over heated. Took it apart and saw the radiator leaking. Replace it. Started it. Ran it for about 15 minutes. Never appeared to over heat. Started coughing like it was running out of gas. Put gas in it. Wouldn't start. White it was running it wasn't smoking. It doesn't look like it has water in the oil. Took it to a shop. He said it wouldn't start because the cylinders were dry from the over heat. He put oil in the cylinders and it started. No smoke. But the water pump was leaking. I drove it across the street and replaced the water pump and now it won't start again. Could it need oil to be put back in the cylinders? does that mean take the valve cover off? What would have caused this from just a 2 minute ride?
it is fuel injected. But it's not a fuel issue. When i pump the gas (even though i'm not supposed to) you can smell it.
