Why won't my html links work in all browsers?

I made a website in internet explorer. It has an i-frame and underneath of that it had words that were part of a layout I made in photoshop. So then I image-mapped those words that like direct you around the site and the stuff appears in the i-frame. But then I opened the site in chrome and safari and you can't click on the image-mapped "words" at all. So then I just got rid of the "picture" clicking idea and just created links that open in the i-frame with font color and stuff to look like it had before but just added in the coding like a basic a href code. It still won't work in those browsers. I would tell people to just use internet explorer but I know alot of people that will view the page who only have safari and firefox and etc. so it's a huge inconvience. any fixes? thanks
